How To Find Profitable Keywords And Dominate Your Niche

how to find keywordsDo you want to learn how to do keyword research profitably? Are you looking to take your research skills to the next level so you can rank for terms that make you money?

Then keep reading because this article is going to focus on how to find profitable longtail keywords using free tools.

But before I get into that it wouldn’t be fair to you if I didn’t at least recommend the only paid tool that myself and high level seo’ers use to completely dominate our niches.

Truth be told, there are way more reasons to get a paid tool then reasons not too.  You’re not buying the tool to find keywords because you can do that using the Google search box and keyword planner.

You’re buying a paid tool to do the extremely time consuming but very important seo competition analyzes on your keywords so that you know which terms you should be spending your time on ranking and which ones you should avoid.

That is the only reason you pay for a research tool and if you are planning on driving traffic to your sites by ranking high in the search engines then you can not afford not to get a paid tool.  It’s that important to your success!

Having said all that, I’m going to focus this article on how you could do this using free tools but it is not recommended if you plan on taking this seriously.

So with that out of the way, lets dive in…

Why is Finding The Right Keywords So Important

How to find long tail keywords that are specific to what you are promoting is the number one thing that will determine how easy or hard your life will be as a seo organic marketer.

How to discover keyphrases that are profitable comes down to your ability to use a long tail keyword list generator (software) to pick keywords that will be easy(ish) to rank for, that have commercial intent and that are specific to what you are promoting.

One of the best keyword research tips you’ll ever get is this: If the keyterms that you want to rank for in the SERP’s are too broad or too general and they don’t have enough commercial intent and there isn’t enough search volume behind them then you are going to fall flat on your face every time and wonder why it isn’t working.

So in order to ensure that you succeed in ranking for your keyphrases that are going to make you money there are 4 steps we are going to cover below.

4 Steps To Profitable Keyword Research

Step 1: First and foremost there is a mindset change that needs to take place before you can succeed at keyword research. And that mindset is this: It is all about conversions… not about traffic.

It does not matter if you can rank for a keyword that gets 50,000 searches a month… if the keyword doesn’t convert it is absolutely useless. So when it comes to keyphrases, you need to get it out of your head that traffic numbers are important. They do have a place but the importance is with the commercial intent of the keyphrase. Basically how well a keyword converts into money for you.

Step 2: The discovery phase is all about finding all the keyphrases that are specific to what you are promoting.  The only thing we are interested in doing in this step is to gather as many specific keyterms as possible.

I’m going to be covering the free method in this article but there is a paid tool that does everything I’m about to go into and much more, making it way more convenient and a lot easier on you, saving you tons of time. You can learn more about this time-saving convenience tool here.

In the free method we will be using Google’s keyword planner and a tool called Ubersuggest.  So go to Google and type in “keyword planner” without the quotes and click on the top search result.

Once you are there you will need to log into your adwords account in order to use the tool. If you don’t have an adwords account, I’d suggest signing up for one. It takes two minutes to do and you don’t need to run any ppc campaigns in order to have one either.

Once you are logged in and you’re inside keyword planner your next step is to enter 3 to 6 phrases that target what you want to promote. In this example we are going to target acid reflux but you would enter in the phrases that make sense to what you are promoting. In this example these would be terms like:

acid reflux treatment
acid reflux options
stopping acid reflux
preventing acid reflux
reversing acid reflux

Once that is done then click the Get Ideas button.  Next click on the “keywords ideas” tab at the top and you will be presented with a bunch of keyphrases. At this stage in the game your goal is to generate at least 500 keywords. These keywords will be filtered thru at a later step to find all the golden nugget phrases that you will eventually create content around.

But for now all you will do is click on “Add All”, which is going to add all those keywords to your bucket list. Once those keywords are in your bucket you’ll want to click on the little pencil icon and set your “match type” to exact.

By doing this you are telling Google to give you the exact cost per click for the specific keyphrase, making the data Google gives you more accurate.

How to find long tail keywords using UberSuggest

Next is to find all the additional keywords that Googles Keyword Planner didn’t show you and to do this you are going to head over to Ubersuggest.org.  This tool basically mimics Google Suggest. If you don’t know what Google Suggest is go to Google and type in any keyword. After you type in your keyword you will see a bunch of suggestions drop down like in the example below.

googles_suggestions

The downer about Google suggest is that it doesn’t show you all of the suggestions. It usually only shows you a handful but you really want as many as possible as these are actual keywords that people type into the search box and a lot of them have good search volume and good commercial intent which makes them excellent candidates.

So what Ubersuggest does is it uses Googles api and goes right into their massive database and pulls out all of the suggestions for you, and all you have to do is select the ones that best match what you are promoting.  I must warn you though… because this tool is free, as with anything free online, it comes with it’s own problems. The biggest of them being that it does not work 100% of the time.

Well, it’s official. I’ve stopped bothering with other keyword tools for niche discovery. The only long tail keyword generator tool I use now is this one — and I use it almost every day. Jon and Josh are an unstoppable force, and this tool simply amazes me. Best of all, I am now a lifetime member — I feel like I won the keyword lotto.

- Mark Mason,

Once you are at their home page you want to enter the most relevant keyphrases one at a time into their search box and it will return all the suggestions that are in Google’s database.

When you are ready to add a keyword to your cart just click on the green plus sign to the left of the keyword and it will add it to your cart. If you want to drill down on a particular keyword, just click on it to see more results.

Just take the necessary time needed to go through your entire list, adding the key-terms that make sense to you. Once your done, just click on the “Get” button and copy your keywords into a spread sheet or notepad.

Once you’ve done this process for the main terms you are going after you should have a pretty big list of new keywords. In this example, 154 new keywords were found.  The next step is to copy and paste these new keyphrases back into Google’s keyword planner in batches of 50.

Google will present you with more relevant keywords that were not in the original list and your job is to go through this new list and add to your plan any terms that make sense for what you are promoting.

Once you’ve completed this task for all of your main keyphrases you can download your entire list from the keyword planner onto your desktop.  Make sure that you select the CSV option before you download.

Step 3: Keyword Analysis is the next step in this process.  To do this, go find that excel spreadsheet that you downloaded onto your computer from the keyword planner and open it up.  It will look something like this:

keywords_in_excel

You’ll notice that all the data is bunched up and not properly formatted. A neat trick to formatting this data quickly is to click the corner at the top between Column A and Row 1. This will highlight the entire spreadsheet, then go between Column A and B and double click. This will automatically format each Column properly.

And now your spreadsheet will look like this:

formated_excel_sheet

Next is to get rid of a few Columns. You’ll see in the image below which Columns you don’t need so just click on the letter at the top of the Columns you want to remove and this will highlight the entire Column and right click your mouse and select delete. That will remove that Column. Do this for the rest of the Columns that are not needed and you will be left with this:

final_formated_spreadsheet

Next is to filter out the keywords that don’t meet our criteria. This is very quick, just click on the top corner again to highlight the entire spreadsheet then make sure you are on the Home tab, then go over to the right and click on Sort and Filter and then on Custom sort.

Then select Sort by Column B and click on ok. This is going to put all those keywords that have really low search volume up at the top and all you need to do is select them and delete them.

Next is to filter the cost per click Column. So highlight your entire spreadsheet again and click on Sort and Filter, then on Custom sort and then sort by the Column that shows the Suggested Bid price, so in this example it is Column D.

So what you should have now are all the keyterms that have low suggested bid prices. In this example we don’t want any terms that have a cpc under .45 cents. So we are going to highlight all the rows that are under .45 cents and delete them.

The last filter you will do is to sort your keywords alphabetically. So highlights your entire spreadsheet again, then go to Sort and Filter and then to Custom sort and then select sort by Column A.  The final result will look something like this:

sorted_keyword_list

The last thing you need to do is to go through your list briefly and remove any keywords that may have slipped in there that don’t pertain to what you are promoting.  So what did you accomplish?  You very quickly sorted and put in alphabetical order all the keyword phrases that have a good amount of search volume and that have commercial intent.

What is Keyword Commercial Intent

Commercial intent represents how well a particular keyterm will convert in to money.  One thing to keep in mind is that this is not an exact science but the best way I’ve found to finding keyphrases that have a high possibility to convert is to look at the ppc competition of the phrase as well as the cpc (cost per click).

When it comes to ppc, advertisers are not going to spend money on a “per click” basis if a keyword does not convert, so as a general guideline, the higher the ppc competition, the more likely that keyword phrase converts.  The same goes for cpc.  As a general guideline the higher the cpc, the more likely that keyphrase converts.

The best results though have come when I’ve combined both competition and cpc. By combining the two, you are targeting keywords that represent the highest possibility of conversions.

This piece of software is the best key word tool out there and the new 2.0 version takes it to a whole new level. I have been using this tool for over a year and since I got it I have rarely if ever used any of my other keyword tools since – it is that good!!!

Now with the editions that have been made in version 2.0 I don’t know why I would ever need to use anything else. I have canceled two subscriptions in the last year and now I’m going to cancel a third one that helped me find niches- all because this tool DOES everything that those three tools use to do!

Also, now I don’t even open emails about keyword anything or niche finders – why waste the time to read them. I already have the one of a kind Rolls Royce of keyword tools. Cheers,

- Ben Yost,

Determining Keyword SEO Competition

Step 4: Is about analyzing the seo competition to determine if a key-phrase is worth trying to rank for.  Now this part of keyword research is not only very critical but it is the biggest time-suck of the entire process.  This is where using a paid keyword research and competition analysis tool really comes into play because you are paying for convenience both in time and in speed.

But for the sake of this article we will go through how to analyse the seo competition for each keyword.  There are some very important things you need to look at when determining how hard it will be to rank.  You want to go to Google and enter your phrase into the search box to get the top ten results.  When you get the the results, here’s what you need to look at.

top_ten_listing

1. Is the phrase in the url? – If the majority of the rankings have the phrase in the url it is a sign that you are competing with a lot of seo’ers for the term.

2. Is the phrase in the description? - If the majority of the rankings have the phrase in the description, it is a sign that you are competing with a lot of seo’ers for the term.

3. Are the websites listed in the top ten, domains or urls? – If the majority of listing show just the domain name it is a sign of tough competition because generally the homepage (domain name) has the most links pointing to it making it harder to out rank.

4. How many backlinks are pointing to each listing? – In order to determine this, go to ahrefs.com.  Then copy and paste the url or domain (which ever is showing in the search listings) into ahrefs search box. This will give you a very good look into how many backlinks that page or domain has pointing to it.  You will want to open up a free account with them to use their service properly.

5. What is the strength of the backlinks? – To find this you need to go to majesticseo.com.  Then copy and paste each url or domain (which ever is showing in the search listings) into majestic’s search box.  Go to the “Backlinks” tab and look at the “Trust” and “Citation” flow numbers.  The more of these that are 10 or above, the stronger the backlinks are and the harder it will be to out rank that competitor.

majestic_backlink_analysis

And that is it… once those tasks are complete you are left with a list of key-phrases that you can rank for that have good search volume and high commercial intent.  Now the only thing to do is to create content around your keywords and get busy ranking.

So as you can see there are a few things you need to do for every one of your keywords to determine if it will be worth your time to rank for that term.  As I said, very time consuming.  Which is why I can’t stress enough about the importance of using a paid tool to do this kind of mundane mind numbing but very crucial money-making work for you.

All of this can be done in a matter of seconds with just a few clicks of the mouse using the right tool.
